Sixteen Loads is a track composed by Merle Travis regarding a coal miner, based upon life in mines in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Travis initially tape-recorded the tune at the Radio Recorders Studio B in Hollywood, California, on August 8, 1946. Cliffie Stone played bass on the recording. It was first released in July 1947 by Capitol on Travis's album Folk Songs of the Hills. The tune came to be a gold document. The line You pack sixteen heaps and what do you get? Another day older and also much deeper in debt originated from a letter written by Travis's brother John. One more line came from their father, a coal miner, who would state: I can not manage to die. I owe my spirit to the firm shop.A 1955 version tape-recorded by Tennessee Ernie Ford reached leading in the Billboard charts, while another variation, by Frankie Laine in 1956, was released only in Western Europe, where it gave Ford's version competitors. On March 25, 2015, Ford's variation of the song was sworn in into the Library of Congress's National Recording Pc registry.
